An exciting new art exhibition is opening in the south of the Isle of Man to honor Edward Ashton Cannell, a talented Manx painter who was almost forgotten for many years. The exhibition, titled 'Edward Ashton Cannell: A Manxman and His Art,' will be held at the Rushen Heritage Centre on Bridson Street, starting Tuesday and running until 1 November. Cannell was born in Port Erin in 1927 and became known for his beautiful landscape and maritime watercolour paintings. He studied at the Douglas School of Art, where he was influenced by the famous artist Archibald Knox.

Curator Christa Viohl explained that the exhibition aims to celebrate Cannell's outstanding art and give everyone a chance to discover more about his life and work. Cannell was one of Britain's last traditional landscape painters, and his paintings often featured scenes from the Isle of Man, such as country roads, fields, cottages, and the sea. After studying at the Liverpool College of Art, Cannell became a full-time artist in 1973 and returned to the Isle of Man to teach at the Douglas School of Art. Later, he moved to London, where he taught at several schools, but he always returned to the island to paint and visit loved ones.

Cannell was described by Ms Viohl as a fascinating character and an exceptional artist. Although he died in London in 1994, his work has been displayed at prestigious venues like the Royal Academy of Arts and the Paris Salon. The exhibition at Rushen Heritage Centre marks the final show of the season before the centre closes for the winter, only opening for special activity sessions on select days. Visitors can view the exhibition from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10:00 and 16:00 BST.

The BBC Isle of Man encourages people to share which stories they would like to see covered and offers more stories about the island on their website and social media. The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Edward Ashton Cannell, his artistic journey, and the rich cultural history of the Isle of Man. Other stories from the island include tales about Archibald Knox, unique sculptures, and historical artifacts, all contributing to the vibrant heritage of the Isle of Man.
