Cyanide teacups in Room 502: Mystery of the Bangkok hotel deaths

Investigators believe that Sherine Chong had borrowed a significant amount of money from Thi Nguyen Phuong and Hong Pham Thanh to invest in a hospital project in Japan. The couple, who owned a construction business, had been trying unsuccessfully to recover their funds, and the meeting in the hotel room was likely intended to discuss this financial issue. Thi Nguyen Phuong Lan was present to assist Sherine in communicating with the couple regarding the investment. Dinh Tran Phu was there as Sherine's make-up artist. The connection of Dang Hung Van to the group remains unclear. There was also a seventh name on the hotel reservation, the sister of one of the deceased, who returned to Vietnam and is not considered involved in the incident. The group had checked into the hotel separately over the weekend and occupied five rooms—four on the seventh floor and one on the fifth. Sherine checked into Room 502 on Sunday, and the others visited her that day before returning to their own rooms for the night. On Monday, Dang Hung Van ordered six cups of tea and Dinh Tran Phu ordered fried rice to be delivered to Room 502 at 14:00 local time. When the waiter arrived, Sherine was alone in the suite and appeared visibly stressed, refusing the offer to brew tea for her guests. Shortly after, the rest of the group arrived, and they all entered the room together. After that, there was no sign of movement from inside. They were scheduled to check out on Monday but failed to do so. The police entered the room on Tuesday afternoon and found all six individuals dead on the floor. The initial investigation revealed that two of the victims seemed to have attempted to reach the door but were unable to do so in time. All the bodies exhibited signs of cyanide poisoning, which can be fatal within minutes. Their lips and nails had turned dark purple, indicating a lack of oxygen, while their internal organs appeared red, another sign of cyanide poisoning. Investigators have stated that there is no other explanation for their deaths except for cyanide. Further tests are being conducted to determine the concentration of the poison and to rule out the presence of any other toxins. Cyanide works by depriving the body's cells of oxygen, which can lead to heart attacks. Early symptoms of cyanide poisoning include dizziness, shortness of breath, and vomiting. In Thailand, the use of cyanide is heavily regulated, and those found with unauthorized access to it can face up to two years in prison. Police suspect that one of the deceased may have been responsible for the poisoning, possibly due to financial troubles, but they have not disclosed who that might be. Reports indicate that the meeting in Bangkok was intended to negotiate a settlement over the failed investment, but it did not succeed. The police are also pursuing other leads in the investigation. They have sought a statement from the group's tour guide, who mentioned that before her death, Thi Nguyen Phuong Lan had requested someone to purchase traditional medicine containing snake blood for her joint pain. Additionally, two metal beverage containers that did not belong to the hotel were found in the suite, placed next to the cyanide-laced tea cups. The Thai government is eager to resolve this case quickly, especially as they are working to attract more tourists to the country. This incident comes at a challenging time for Thailand, which has recently expanded visa-free entry to 93 countries to boost its tourism industry, a vital part of its economy that has yet to fully recover from the pandemic. The Prime Minister of Thailand visited the hotel following the incident and assured the public that there was no threat to safety, emphasizing that it was a private matter. For the families of the victims, the shock and grief are overwhelming.
