K-drama My Happy Ending: Jang Na-ra leads melodrama with intriguing premise but marred by plot holes
The narrative revolves around Jang Na-ra, a renowned actress recognized for her performance in the 2021 series 'Sell Your Haunted House'. She reappears on our television screens, portraying a prosperous entrepreneur named Seo Jae-won. Despite her seemingly perfect life, she begins to suspect that all the men in her life are conspiring against her. The audience first encounters her in a terrifying chase scene on a dark Seoul night, pursued by a masked man. Despite her desperate attempts to escape, the man apprehends her on a bridge and assaults her.
Following this chilling introduction, the show transports us back to the tranquil days preceding the incident. We observe Jae-won on a sunny day, exuding style and confidence as the CEO of a thriving furniture company. She is a workaholic, constantly preparing for the launch of their latest product, leaving her with little time to spend with her seemingly perfect family. Her secretary informs her that her stay-at-home husband has called, humorously suggesting that he is about to file a missing person's report as he and their daughter have not seen Jae-won in 60 hours.
The only blot on Jae-won's life is a mysterious stalker who has been a constant nuisance for the past seven years. His actions are usually harmless, such as sending her unsolicited bouquets, but one day the situation escalates dangerously. An intruder breaks into her office while she is working late into the night. After vandalizing the trophy cabinet in the lobby, the man attempts to force his way into her office. Jae-won is compelled to barricade herself in her office. Just as he manages to breach the door, a security guard arrives in the nick of time, causing the man to flee. This is one of many close encounters that befall Jae-won, and as her stress levels and fear escalate, so does her paranoia. She begins to suspect that her attractive lead designer might be the stalker. Her anxiety also leads her to snoop through her husband's phone, leading her to a building where she witnesses Soon-young secretly meeting another woman - none other than Jae-won's best friend. She is also approached by a dubious insurance investigator who is curiously investigating her mother's death from years ago. He suspects that Jae-won's kindly stepfather might have poisoned her mother. Initially, Jae-won dismisses the idea, but in light of the other disturbing events in her life, a seed of suspicion begins to sprout.
