From Rust to Riches: Phone Box Revival Unveils Local Legends

In the village of Oldcroft in Gloucestershire, a once-forgotten red phone box has become a symbol of community pride and local history. For about fifteen years, the phone box stood unused and was slowly covered by brambles, ferns, and moss. Its glass panes became cloudy, the red paint faded and chipped, and the sign at the top was hard to read. Many people walked past it every day, feeling sad that such a classic part of British life was being lost. Kathy Cook and Roger Deeks, two local residents, decided to do something about it. They joined a group of volunteers who wanted to bring the phone box back to life. Together, they cleared away the overgrown plants, painted the box a bright red, and replaced the broken glass with new Perspex panels. They even found a 'Telephone' sign from another old phone box to make it look just like it did many years ago.

But the volunteers did not stop at just fixing the phone box. They wanted it to be a place where people could learn about the village’s history. They turned the phone box into a mini museum. Inside, they plan to display old photographs, paintings, and stories from people who have lived in Oldcroft for a long time. There will also be maps and information about important places nearby. The group hopes to install a phone that plays recordings of stories from the past, so visitors can hear what life was like in the village many years ago.

The project has brought the community together. Local artists have helped decorate the phone box, and people have shared their memories and family stories. Roger Deeks, who studies local history, says that the most exciting part is hearing stories from people who might not have shared them otherwise. The volunteers have also led nature walks to explore the area and learn about its history. They have even found old boundary stones that show where early settlers lived. Kathy Cook says that seeing the phone box looking smart and being used again makes people happy. The project has helped everyone feel more connected to their village and proud of its rich history.
