Jersey's Youth Centre Gets a Colorful Makeover with Creative Graffiti Art
A collection of artwork created by students and youth groups from across Jersey is now being showcased outside a new youth centre. The art is displayed on large boards surrounding a construction site. One piece features a band and the words 'Youth Arts Jersey', while another shows two smiling characters with the label 'Jersey Grainville'. A third painting is bright yellow and pink, showing a boy playing with a ball, and has the phrase 'A place 4 every1' written across it. These six new graffiti panels were made by young people from different schools and youth projects. According to the Government of Jersey, the art celebrates the creativity and experiences of young people on the island.
Students from Grainville School, d'Auvergne Primary School, Mont à l'Abbé School, Springfield Primary School, and several youth projects all contributed to the artwork. The Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department said that children also shared their ideas for the new centre through the Ann Street Youth ambassador programme. On Jersey Children's Day, 64 young people and 39 parents and interested adults gathered to discuss what they would like to see in the new facility. Some of the suggestions included gaming rooms and spaces where young people could access support and advice.
The new youth centre is scheduled to open in 2028. The government says it will offer modern, inclusive spaces where young people can meet friends, try new activities, develop skills, and get support when needed. There will be rooms with games like pool and table football, as well as comfortable seating areas. The art and ideas from young people will help shape the centre, making it a fun and safe place for everyone. The government hopes the centre will help young people feel happy, included, and supported as they grow and learn.
