New High-Tech Fire System to Zap Battery Blazes at Recycling Center

A recycling center in Eastleigh is planning to upgrade its fire safety system due to a growing number of fires caused by lithium batteries. Biffa, the company that operates the waste transfer station on Tower Lane, has applied for permission to install advanced fire prevention equipment. The facility, marked by a large blue building and a sign reading 'Biffa Southampton TS and recycling centre,' has seen an increase in fire risks, especially from lithium batteries found in many everyday devices. These batteries can be dangerous if thrown away incorrectly, as they are known to catch fire easily. The new fire suppression system will include automated machinery and infrared cameras that constantly monitor the waste piles for heat. If the cameras detect a hot spot, the system will automatically activate water cannons to cool the area before a fire can start. Recent data from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service shows that there were 156 incidents involving lithium batteries in the past year, which is 64 more than the previous year. Over the last three years, Portsmouth has had 39 battery-related fires, Southampton has had 24, and the Isle of Wight has had 18. One of these fires was so serious that it caused part of the M275 motorway to close for a weekend. In response to these risks, Hampshire County Council is seeking to extend temporary planning permission for two of its household waste recycling centers, located at Fishery Lane on Hayling Island and Casbrook near Romsey, for another ten years.
