West Midlands Bootcamp Boosts Working-Class Artists to Gallery Fame

A new bootcamp in the West Midlands is making a big difference for artists who want to start their careers. Tara Harris, an award-winning artist, said her confidence grew a lot after joining the programme. The bootcamp is designed to help working class artists get their art into galleries and magazines, which can be very hard without the right connections or money. Ruth Millington, an art curator and critic from Birmingham, created the ten-week programme to give artists the support they need. The bootcamp has already run twice this year and is free for visual artists in the region, thanks to funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Sandra Palmer, known as The Brummy Artist, said the bootcamp was a 'game-changer' for her. Six artists from the first bootcamp have already shown their work in galleries, and all twenty participants have been featured in magazines like Stylist. The bootcamp takes place at Solihull College & University Centre and includes guest speakers, portfolio reviews by Ruth Millington, and behind-the-scenes visits to galleries, museums, and studios. Every bootcamp ends with an exhibition at The Core in Solihull, giving artists a chance to display their work to the public.

Robbie Jefcott, one of the artists, is now represented by Lux Gallery. Tara Harris said the bootcamp gave her the motivation and belief to be seen as a real artist. Yulia Lisle, who is originally from Ukraine, secured her first solo exhibition at Nook gallery after joining the bootcamp. She said the support she received changed everything for her. Ruth Millington wanted to make the art world more fair, so that artists without connections or wealth could have the same opportunities. Odette Campbell, another participant, said the bootcamp gave her extra belief that her craft, stitching, belongs in the art world. She is now running a six-week craft club at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The second group of bootcamp artists are currently showing their work at The Courtyard Gallery until January 10. Sandra Palmer has also been featured in Stylist magazine. Ruth Millington said the art world is very competitive and hard to navigate, and art schools do not always teach artists how to prepare for galleries. Hayley Pepler from the West Midlands Combined Authority said they are thrilled with the success of the bootcamp and how it meets local needs.
