Quentin Blake's Whimsical Mural Bridges London's Past and Present

A new mural created by the well-known artist Sir Quentin Blake has been revealed in north London, just before the opening of a new illustration centre named after him. Sir Quentin Blake is famous for his unique drawings and has illustrated or written over 500 books, including many of Roald Dahl's most popular stories. His latest work, called 'A Bridge to the Past,' explores the history of the New River, an artificial waterway built in the 1600s to bring clean water from Hertfordshire to Clerkenwell in London. The mural is large and painted in blue and white, and it was unveiled by Sir Quentin himself, who attended the event in a wheelchair, wearing a light blue shirt and brown vest, and holding a tan hat.

The mural is now displayed at the Quentin Blake Illustration Centre in Clerkenwell, which will open its doors to the public on Friday. The centre features three galleries and aims to celebrate the art of illustration. The mural, which measures almost five meters wide and two meters tall, is displayed in the centre's café, making it a central piece for visitors to enjoy. The artwork shows a bridge over the New River, filled with people dressed in clothes from different historical periods. Sir Quentin explained that the bridge in the mural does not actually exist in real life; he invented it to serve as a 'bridge to the past. ' Most of the people on the bridge are characters he imagined, except for two men fishing, who were inspired by an old print from the 1700s.

The New River was an important project when it was built, as it provided clean water to the people of Clerkenwell and became a place for leisure and enjoyment. The centre hopes to teach visitors about this history through art. To celebrate the opening, the first 50 visitors will be allowed in for free if they draw an illustration on a voucher, which they can collect at the centre on opening day.
