Dementia-friendly art class 'full of love and fun'
A unique art class in Wrexham is making a big difference for people living with dementia and their families. The class takes place in a beautiful garden, where participants gather around a wooden table surrounded by flowers and plants. Each person has paper and pencils, and some are busy drawing while their teacher, Margaret Roberts, offers gentle guidance. The atmosphere is peaceful, with empty mugs on the table showing that everyone enjoys a cup of tea while they work. Kath and John Griffiths have been married for 63 years, and for the last ten years, Kath has also been John’s carer since he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She says there are good days and bad days, but the weekly art class always helps John feel calm. John agrees, saying that drawing is relaxing and helps him express his feelings.
The class is organized by Dementia Friendly Wrexham and is open to people with dementia, their carers, family members, and friends. Simone and Alex, two regulars, are often seen laughing together as they work on their art. For Kath, the class is a place to relax, chat, and get support from others who understand her situation. John, who used to work as an engineer, gets completely absorbed in his artwork. Kath says that both she and John have surprised themselves with what they have created, and they are proud of their achievements. Margaret, the teacher, has a special way of encouraging everyone to try new things. Kath says it is never a problem to get John to attend the class because they have made so many friends there.
The artwork created by Kath, John, and the other 33 members of the class is currently on display at Chirk Castle, a National Trust property. The exhibition runs until the middle of August, and seeing their work on display gives everyone a sense of pride. Frank Hemmings, a dementia champion who has been involved with the class from the start, says the real benefit is the peaceful time spent together. For two hours, people with dementia can relax and enjoy their art, while carers get a chance to talk and share advice. Frank says some of the art is of a very high standard, but it can be sad when someone forgets they made it just minutes after finishing. Mike Davies brings his 94-year-old mother, Eileen, to the class every week, and they both enjoy being with others who understand what they are going through. The way people with dementia create art can change over time, but the class helps them express themselves and feel calm. Jan Keen says her husband Terry now draws in a more abstract way, but he still enjoys it and benefits from meeting people and putting his ideas on paper. Margaret, the teacher, says the group is full of love and fun, and for many, it is the highlight of their week. The class is filled with laughter, support, and creativity, making it a special place for everyone involved.
