Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the executive director of the Sag-Aftra union, which represents 170,000 media professionals worldwide, explained that many creative workers are anxious about the impact of AI on their jobs. Although Disney and OpenAI have assured the union that the deal does not include the use of real actors’ voices or likenesses, the fear remains that AI could eventually replace human creativity. Crabtree-Ireland emphasized that nobody wants to see the unique talents of people replaced by machines, and the union is closely watching how these technologies are used.
Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, described the partnership as an important moment for the industry, promising that the company will use AI responsibly to expand its storytelling. The new features are expected to launch in early 2026, allowing users to generate content with characters from movies like Zootopia, Moana, and Encanto, as well as famous figures like Luke Skywalker and Deadpool. However, the deal has also raised questions about copyright and the protection of creative rights. Disney recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google, accusing it of copyright infringement, and entertainment unions are urging stronger safeguards for actors and creators. There are also concerns about AI being used to make fake videos of real people, which has led to public outcry in the past. As technology continues to advance, many in the creative world are calling for clear rules to protect their work and ensure that AI is used ethically.
