Get Up Close and Personal with the Giant Glowing Sun Sculpture!

A stunning new art installation has arrived at Grimsby Minster, a church in North East Lincolnshire. The artwork is a huge, glowing sculpture of the Sun, created by artist Luke Jerram and named Helios after the Greek god of the Sun. This impressive piece will be on display until 4 May, giving visitors a rare chance to see what the Sun looks like up close. The sculpture was made using more than 400,000 high-resolution photographs of the Sun’s surface, along with data from NASA. The result is a detailed and realistic model that hangs from the ceiling of the church, filling the space with a warm, orange glow.

Charlotte Bowen, who works for The Culture House, an arts charity based in Grimsby, explained why the installation is so special. She said, 'It gives us a chance to see what the Sun actually looks like close up, which we would never get the chance to do. ' Normally, the Sun is too bright and far away to look at safely, but this sculpture lets people study its surface and colors in detail. The church’s tall ceilings and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place for such a large and beautiful artwork. Charlotte added, 'The minster really lends itself to these lovely, large-scale installations. It feels really serene and calming. We’re one of the first in the north of England to host the artwork, which is great. '

The Sun sculpture is 19 feet wide, about the size of a small bus, and is lit from the inside to make it glow like the real Sun. The display also includes surround sound created by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson, adding to the experience. Luke Jerram is known for his large-scale art installations. He has previously made models of the Earth and the Moon, which have been shown around the world. The Sun project was made possible by funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, as part of a program called Our Future Starts Here. This program aims to inspire creativity and positive change in the region. While the Sun is at Grimsby Minster, there are other activities for visitors, such as children’s storytelling, yoga sessions, and a special light night event from 17 to 19 April. The Sun sculpture has already attracted many visitors, who are excited to see such a unique piece of art in their town.
