Unveiling Nottingham Cathedral's Stunning Starry Ceilings Revival!
Nottingham Cathedral is currently undergoing a major restoration project to bring back its original beauty. The work is focused on three chapels at the east end of the cathedral, and the first chapel is almost finished. Underneath five to seven layers of old paint, conservators have discovered colorful starry ceilings, floral patterns, emblems, and texts. These decorations were designed by Augustus Pugin in 1841, a famous architect known for his gothic style. The project, called the Restoring Pugin Project, received £1. 69 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is helping cover the total cost of £2. 3 million. The goal is to restore the chapels and walkways so that the inside of the cathedral looks just as Pugin imagined it.
Ana Longreira is a senior conservator at Cliveden Conservation, the company leading the restoration. She says that Nottingham Cathedral is one of the largest buildings Pugin ever designed, making it very important in history. Ana believes the decorations are a key part of the cathedral, not just because they are beautiful, but because they show how the building was meant to look. The team has carefully removed layers of paint to reveal the original designs. They found a blue ceiling with yellow stars, all painted by hand, and red flowers along the beams. The conservators are using special paints to recreate these designs as closely as possible to the originals.
The project is also providing opportunities for new people to learn about conservation. Seven career starters have joined the team, including three conservators and four people learning about heritage management. Volunteers are also helping out. Mary Scott, who is 26 years old, started as an intern after finishing her degree and is now a conservator on the project. She says it has been exciting to discover the old decorations and help bring them back to life. The restoration work began in August and is expected to be finished by the end of 2026. This project is not only saving a piece of history but also giving people valuable experience in conservation and heritage work.
