Essex has become a hotspot for film and television production, with nearly eight million pounds spent in the county over the past four years. This surge in spending has brought significant benefits to local businesses, landowners, and creative professionals. One of the most notable recent productions was Practical Magic 2, which featured stars like Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. The Epping Ongar Railway, with its vintage 1960s carriages, was chosen as a filming location for a key scene, and the railway received payment for its participation.

Beacon Hill Fort in Harwich is another example of a local site that has profited from the film industry. The fort, which dates back to the time of Henry VIII and was used during both World Wars, is owned by Barry Sharp. He explained that while he does not charge visitors to explore the historic site, he relies on donations and income from filming to maintain the property. When film crews use the fort, Barry can earn up to six thousand pounds a week, which helps with the upkeep of the old buildings. He enjoys hosting the crews and often provides them with lunch during their stay.

Other Essex businesses have also found new opportunities thanks to the film and TV boom. Safe Fire Protection, based in Rayleigh, offers safety advice and support for productions, especially when scenes involve fire or explosions. Owner Jay Leslie says that while film and TV work is a small part of his business, he is ready to help more studios in the future. Sarah Hardy, a food artist from Sible Hedingham, has created props for various shows, starting with a cake for the comedy series Peep Show. She says that word of mouth has helped her business grow, and she enjoys being part of the creative process. In Southend-on-Sea, Michelle French co-founded a company that stores props, sets, and costumes for productions, ensuring that valuable items are reused rather than wasted. She believes that the growing film industry is fantastic news for Essex, as it brings more jobs and economic growth to the area.
