The Anti-Deception Coordination Centre, a division of the Hong Kong police force, successfully thwarted the transfer of HK$1. 1 billion (US$140. 8 million) to scammers in the first 10 months of the year. This sum represents the losses that could have been incurred by victims of technology crimes and various scams both within the city and abroad.

The Centre sprang into action following pleas from 814 victims to halt money transfers from their city bank accounts. The most significant case in monetary terms involved a woman residing outside Hong Kong, who claimed she was duped out of US$41. 7 million in an online investment scam, with her money being funneled into city bank accounts. The anti-fraud officers initiated a trace on her money after receiving a stop-payment request in March.

The police did not disclose whether this case was among the 814 between January and October this year where they successfully intercepted the funds. Victims residing outside the city fell prey to various forms of deception, including telephone scams, fraudulent investment deals, online romance scams, and email fraud. Since its inception in July 2017 until October 31, the anti-fraud squad has intercepted a total of HK$12. 3 billion in 4,546 stop-payment requests.
