A well-known restaurant in Cheltenham, Lumiere, recently faced an unexpected problem when another local business, The Nook on Five, published a blog post that wrongly claimed Lumiere had closed down. The mistake happened because The Nook on Five used artificial intelligence, or AI, to help write their blog. Unfortunately, the AI got it wrong, and the post was published without anyone checking it first. Helen Howe, who runs Lumiere with her husband Jon, said the false information could have caused a lot of trouble for their small, family-run restaurant. She explained that Jon, who is also the head chef, found the blog post while searching for new reviews about Lumiere on Google. He was surprised to see that The Nook on Five had written about Lumiere closing, especially since they said it was one of their favorite restaurants and they were sad to see it go. Helen made it clear that Lumiere is still open and doing well, saying, 'We've been here 17 years, and we're very much alive and kicking. '

After realizing the mistake, The Nook on Five quickly deleted the blog post and posted a public apology on their social media. They explained that the error happened because the AI-generated draft was not properly reviewed before being published. The Nook on Five said they always try to support other independent restaurants in the area and often recommend Lumiere to both tourists and locals. They promised to improve their process and make sure all future posts are checked more carefully. The restaurant said, 'That is entirely on us, and we are reviewing our internal processes to ensure that it does not happen again. '

Helen Howe said that Lumiere was lucky the mistake was caught quickly, as the blog post had only been online for a few days. She believes the AI got confused because Lumiere had closed for just one week while she and Jon were away, not because the restaurant was shutting down for good. Helen pointed out that while AI can be a useful tool, it is not perfect and people need to be careful when using it. She said, 'AI is so useful when used correctly, but it's not foolproof. You have to put that due diligence in and you have to read what it produces for you and you have to take responsibility for that.
