Kirsty, a florist from North Yorkshire, lost £80,000 after meeting a scammer on a dating app. The scammer pretended to be a man named Patrick and made up a story about having an accident. Kirsty sent him money, believing she was helping someone she cared about. She later found out that Patrick was not real, and the photos he used belonged to an innocent person.

Banks are working hard to protect their customers, but they say they cannot do it alone. They want tech companies, like social media platforms and online marketplaces, to do more to stop scams. This could mean having stronger rules for checking if sellers are real, removing fake ads, and making payment systems safer. Even though banks can sometimes get people’s money back, not everyone is so lucky.
