Tasty Throwback: Award-Winning School Dinner Exhibit Serves Nostalgia

The Food Museum in Stowmarket, Suffolk, has created a unique exhibition that celebrates the history of school dinners, a topic that brings back memories for many people. Launched in April 2025, the exhibition will run for two years and explores the foods that children have eaten at school over the decades. Visitors can see and even taste classic school foods like semolina, pink custard, and turkey twizzlers, which are sure to spark nostalgia and maybe even a few laughs. This creative exhibition has received national recognition, winning the Best Temporary or Touring Exhibition of the Year at the Museum and Heritage Awards in London. The awards ceremony celebrates the best museums, galleries, and cultural attractions across the country. Jenny Cousins, the museum director, expressed her excitement about the win, saying that school food is something almost everyone remembers, whether those memories are good or bad. Chloe Brett, who works in visitor services at the museum, mentioned that an exhibition about school dinners was one of the most requested topics from visitors, showing just how important and memorable school meals are to people.

But the exhibition is about more than just food. It also looks at important issues like poverty, politics, and responsibility, showing how school dinners have changed over time and what they say about society. The exhibition was made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, and Thomas Ridley Foodservice. It will be open until 2027, giving people plenty of time to visit and learn about the history and impact of school dinners. The museum hopes that the exhibition will encourage visitors to think about their own experiences with school food and how these meals have shaped their lives.
