How weather apps are trying to be more accurate

Zoe Ashbridge, a 33-year-old from Shropshire, has embarked on a two-year journey around the world on her bicycle. To make the physically demanding journey more manageable, she and her partner Stewart utilise a weather app called Windy. This app provides them with real-time updates on wind direction, enabling them to plan their routes more efficiently.

The use of weather apps like Windy is becoming increasingly prevalent as advancements in technology and artificial intelligence allow for more detailed and personalised weather forecasts. Steven Smith, the CEO of US-based weather forecasting company Accuweather, emphasises the importance of these advancements. He states that their ultimate goal is to help save lives and protect property by enabling people to make informed decisions based on accurate weather forecasts.

The UK's Met Office has also been making significant strides in improving its weather forecasting technology. They have enhanced their digital weather maps and increased the amount of data they incorporate, allowing users to track weather patterns in real time. They have also introduced specialised beach and mountain forecasts to cater to a wider range of users.

In a bid to further improve the accuracy of their forecasts, the Met Office has partnered with Scottish airline Loganair. Sensors installed on Loganair's aircraft collect environmental data during flights, which is then used by the Met Office to predict extreme weather events and identify localised thunderstorms and fog.

Eric Floehr, founder of ForecastWatch, a company that analyses the performance of weather providers, acknowledges the improvements in weather forecasting technology. However, he also highlights the need for increased investment in new weather app companies, particularly in light of the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns due to climate change.

Accuweather has been at the forefront of utilising artificial intelligence in weather forecasting since the late 1980s. They use AI to predict weather patterns and to translate their reports into over 100 different languages, catering to their global audience. They are also focusing on providing more information on severe weather and air quality, recognising the growing concern for health and safety in relation to weather conditions.

Zoe Ashbridge, who has used the Windy app in 27 countries, is a testament to the utility of these weather apps. She even recommends the app to other cyclists she encounters who are struggling against the wind.
