Tweed Time Travel: Victorian Designs Spark 200 Years of Fashion Magic

Lovat Mill, located in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, is the last remaining tweed producer in the region. This historic textile mill has been making tweed for two centuries and is well-known for supplying fabric to international fashion brands such as Chanel. To mark the 200th anniversary of tweed, Lovat Mill has recreated Victorian-era designs, inspired by patterns found in 19th-century notebooks discovered in the mill's attic. These new designs celebrate the rich history of tweed, which was first created in Scottish Borders textile mills in 1826 after a London tradesman misread its original name, 'tweel. '

The mill's story took a dramatic turn in 1999 when Alan Cumming and Stephen Rendle, two textile experts, saved it from closure. Both men had studied at the Scottish College of Textiles and worked for Allied Textiles, designing and exporting cloth for international clients. After a business trip to Milan, they were encouraged to buy a mill to continue their craft. They raised the necessary funds and purchased Lovat Mill, soon discovering 15 Victorian archive books in the attic. These books contained hundreds of handwritten designs, which inspired the creation of 17 new anniversary cloths, including the Shepherd's Check, originally made for shepherds on local estates.

Cumming, now the mill's design director, described the discovery as finding the 'DNA of Scottish tweed. ' The pair worked tirelessly to produce samples and drove to Lake Como in Italy to meet industry contacts. Their efforts paid off when Dolce & Gabbana became their first major client, ordering thousands of meters of tweed. This success attracted other global brands like Chanel and Gucci, and even the King commissioned special tweed for Dumfries House and his coronation. Designer Ruth Duff, who worked on the Dumfries House Tweed, remarked that 'you don't need to go to Milan when Milan is coming to Hawick. ' Today, Lovat Mill continues to honor its heritage while serving the world's top fashion houses.
