Join the Folk Revival: Saving Guernsey's Lost Musical Treasures!

In Guernsey, a small island, people are worried that their folk music and culture are slowly disappearing. Every month, the Guernsey Folk Club gathers to play music, sing old songs, and enjoy each other's company. The room is filled with the sound of guitars, people singing together, and friends tapping their feet to the music. This kind of gathering is common in many places where people love folk music, but in Guernsey, there is a fear that these traditions are fading away.

Jannick Brehaut, who works at the Folk and Costume Museum, is one of the few young people who still speaks Guernésiais, the local language. He says that in the past, people did not respect Guernsey's culture. Many thought it was only for people from the countryside and not something to be proud of. When children who spoke Guernésiais went to school, they often had bad experiences because their teachers did not understand them. Jannick also believes that during the times when Calvinist and Methodist religions were strong, music and dance were seen as wrong, so people stopped doing them. Now, most people who speak Guernésiais are elderly, and every year, more of them pass away, taking their knowledge with them. Jannick says that Guernsey's culture is unique and not just a mix of French or English. He thinks that if people realized what they were losing, they would be very upset.

James Dumbelton, a musician who studies Guernsey's lost music, says that the island needs a 'grassroots revolution' to save its folk culture. He believes that for a culture to survive, people need to feel like they belong to it. He also points out that collectors who visited Guernsey in the past were not interested in English songs, so very few were recorded. Now, most people speak English, but the old songs that were saved are in French. Doreen Laine, who leads a group that keeps folk dancing alive, says that these dances are an important part of Guernsey's culture and should not be allowed to disappear. She explains that during the German occupation, many traditional dances were lost and not written down. Over time, each generation has tried to keep the dances alive. Yan Marquis, an expert in Guernésiais, says that the language was never taught in a formal way, so everyone wrote it differently. He believes that language is a big part of identity, and even if people do not speak Guernésiais, they still feel connected to it. Mick Le Huray, who runs the Folk Club, warns that Guernsey's folk music could be lost forever if young people do not learn it. He says that in other cultures, folk songs are passed down, but in Guernsey, this might not happen unless someone takes action. He hopes that more people will become interested and help keep the music and culture alive for future generations.
