Bristol’s Charm Sparks New Twist in Young Sherlock Adventures

The new television series Young Sherlock has just premiered, and it is already getting attention for its creative use of real-life locations. While the story is set in famous cities like Oxford and London, many scenes were actually filmed in Bristol and Somerset. People who live in Bristol might recognize places like Broad Street and Underfall Yard, which were transformed to look like Victorian-era London for the show. The production team chose these spots because Bristol has a mix of old and new buildings, making it a great place to film a story set in the past.

Deon Du Preez, the supervising location manager for Young Sherlock, explained that filming in Bristol is always enjoyable because the city offers so many options. He said that the architecture in Bristol is both historic and modern, which gives filmmakers a lot of creative freedom. Du Preez also mentioned that the people of Bristol, including residents, businesses, and city officials, were very supportive and made the filming process smooth. In fact, the writers of Young Sherlock sometimes changed parts of the script to better fit the locations they found in Bristol, showing how important the city was to the production.

Besides Bristol, the show was also filmed in other nearby places, such as Shepton Mallet in Somerset and locations in South Wales. The old prison in Shepton Mallet was used to represent a Victorian London jail, and the film crew did such a good job restoring parts of the building that the prison's attraction director asked them to leave some of the changes in place. At Underfall Yard in Bristol, the blacksmith's workshop was used for an exciting action scene. After a fire damaged part of the yard in 2023, the money earned from filming helped with repairs. The people involved in the show said that blending real history with the story of Sherlock Holmes was both fun and rewarding. They were proud to show off Bristol and its surroundings in the new series, and they hope viewers will enjoy spotting familiar places while watching Young Sherlock.
