TikTok's US Fate: Sale Drama and Deadline Delays Unfold

TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in the United States, with millions of users sharing short videos every day. Several investors are interested in buying TikTok's US operations. Frank McCourt, a billionaire investor, told the BBC that he and his group are ready to buy TikTok if the opportunity arises. His group includes Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, and Canadian investor Kevin O'Leary. McCourt said he hopes TikTok will end up in the hands of people who follow the law and protect users' privacy. He also wants to run TikTok without any Chinese technology, including its powerful recommendation algorithm, and has developed alternative technology through his Project Liberty initiative.

President Trump has mentioned that well-known US investors like Oracle chairman Larry Ellison and Dell Technologies' Michael Dell could be involved in the purchase. There were expectations that a deal would be finalized during a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in October, but no agreement was reached. Since then, neither ByteDance nor the Chinese government has announced approval of a sale, despite Trump's claims that a deal is close.

McCourt expressed concerns about the concentration of power and influence that platforms like TikTok have, saying it is important for the app to be owned by people who will use it responsibly. He believes that whatever happens, TikTok should either be sold to trustworthy owners or shut down if it cannot meet US legal requirements.

As the deadline approaches, TikTok's future in the US remains uncertain. Users, investors, and government officials are all waiting to see what will happen.
