Dog Ears, an animation company from Northern Ireland, has made history by creating the first animated series from the region to be featured on Apple TV. The show, called My Brother the Minotaur, began as simple sketches in a school notebook. Over time, these sketches turned into a full animated series that has received a lot of praise. The story follows a young minotaur, a creature that is half boy and half bull, who is found and raised by humans. Along with his loyal human brother and a group of friends, the minotaur tries to discover where he comes from. They face many challenges and must fight against dark forces that want to stop them from learning the truth.

John McDaid, the founder of Dog Ears, explained that making the series took many years of hard work, teamwork, and passion. He said that getting approval from Apple was a big moment for everyone involved. At the busiest time, about 180 people were working on the show. The series features well-known actors like Brian Cox and Michael Sheen, as well as some new voices. Donal Mangan, who created the story, first worked with Dog Ears in 2014. He wanted to make a show that children could relate to, focusing on themes like feeling different, trying to fit in, and finding your place in the world. The relationship between the two brothers and their community is at the heart of the story.

The creators were inspired by both Greek mythology and Irish folklore. They wanted to use familiar ideas, like the labyrinth from Greek myths, but also add their own unique twist. When Apple decided to show My Brother the Minotaur, the team felt a huge sense of achievement and excitement. They were also relieved, because in the animation industry, projects can sometimes be canceled before they are finished. John McDaid said that the idea for the show came from asking staff if they had any interesting ideas, and Donal Mangan shared his story from his school days. The journey from a sketchbook to a global audience on Apple TV is something the team is very proud of. Carrie Bonner, who started as a production assistant and became a production coordinator, said she is proud of the show and happy that people enjoy it.
