Meet Bioloon: The Eco-Friendly Balloon That Vanishes in 9 Months!

A group of scientists in London have created a new kind of party balloon that they say is the world's first fully biodegradable balloon. This means that the balloon can break down completely in nature without leaving behind harmful chemicals or materials. The scientists work at Imperial College London, and they wanted to solve the problem of balloon litter, which can be very dangerous for wildlife, especially animals that live in the ocean. Regular balloons can take years to break down, and as they do, they can release toxic chemicals into the environment. The new balloon, called Bioloon, is different because it biodegrades within nine months.

The project was partly funded by a party planner named Charlotte Melia. She was worried about how much balloon litter was harming animals, especially after seeing thousands of popped balloons left over from a big event. She said that was the moment she decided to take action and help find a better solution. Balloons are a big problem for seabirds and other marine animals because they can mistake balloon pieces for food. Studies have shown that balloons are much more likely to kill seabirds than other types of plastic trash. Some people have even called for balloon releases to be banned because of the risk to wildlife.

The scientists explained that regular balloons are made from natural rubber, but they go through a process called sulphur vulcanization. This process makes the balloons strong and stretchy, but it also means they do not break down easily. Plus, chemicals like heavy metal salts and nitrosamines are added, which can be harmful when they get into the environment. Even balloons that are labeled as 100 percent biodegradable often do not break down completely. The new Bioloon balloon starts with the same kind of rubber, but the scientists use a different method to link the rubber together without adding any harmful chemicals. This makes the balloon safe for the environment and able to break down fully. The team says that Bioloon will be available for people to buy within two years, and they hope to use the same material for other products like gloves, medical equipment, and clothing in the future.
