Beryl Cook's Vibrant Art Show Sails Into Plymouth with 3,000 Tickets Gone!

A new art exhibition in Plymouth is drawing a lot of attention, with over 3,000 tickets already sold. The exhibition, called 'Pride and Joy,' celebrates the work of Beryl Cook, a well-known artist from Plymouth famous for her colorful and lively paintings of people enjoying themselves. The show will be held at The Box in Plymouth and will run for four months, starting on 24 January. Visitors will be able to see eighty of her paintings, including the popular 'Sailors and Seagulls,' which shows four men dressed as sailors sitting on a bench with two seagulls in front of them. One of the seagulls looks like it is squawking loudly.

Beryl Cook was known for painting scenes from everyday life. She liked to capture people having fun in pubs, shopping, going on holidays, and celebrating at parties. Even though she passed away in 2008, her art continues to be loved by many people. Her granddaughter, Sophie Cook, shared that Beryl would have been thrilled to see four life-size sculptures based on her paintings placed around the city. These sculptures were created with help from the Theatre Royal Plymouth and will be displayed in different locations, such as The Hoe, the Barbican, and the Pannier Market. Sophie said that Beryl had a deep love for Plymouth, and the city loved her back.

The exhibition will feature more than 80 works, including some that are rarely seen because they are usually kept in private collections or the Cook family archives. The Box says the free show will help people understand how important Beryl Cook was as an artist who showed everyday life in Britain during times of change. Victoria Pomery, the chief executive of The Box, said that Beryl painted Plymouth with warmth and affection for over 40 years. The sculptures will bring her art back to the streets she loved, making people smile. There will also be a comedy walking tour led by Plymouth comedian Suzy Bennett, taking visitors to places Beryl painted. James Mackenzie-Blackman from Theatre Royal Plymouth said Beryl's work celebrated people who were often ignored, and the sculptures are a great way to share her art with everyone in the city. Jemima Laing from Plymouth City Council said Beryl's paintings are famous all over the world and always showed Plymouth with love. She believes the show will be very special, especially since it is happening in the year that would have been Beryl's 100th birthday.
