Heartbeat Lights Spark Joy in Middleport Park's Dazzling Art Show
Middleport Park in Stoke-on-Trent is hosting a unique and free event called Light up Middleport. This event features a series of creative light installations, including a flying fish made from recycled plastic bottles and special light boxes that flash in time with the heartbeats of local residents. The heartbeat lights work by using sensors that track the pulse of people who participate. When someone places their hand on the sensor, the lights begin to flash in rhythm with their heartbeat, making the experience personal and interactive.
This event is the first in a series of light shows planned for different locations across north Staffordshire in the coming months. Future events are already scheduled for Hanley and Newcastle-under-Lyme. The main goal of these events is to bring people together during the darker winter months and offer joyful, free experiences for everyone in the community. Heather Dowler, the interim director of Appetite, one of the organizations behind the event, explained that these light displays are meant to create a sense of togetherness and happiness.
Among the participants in the heartbeat exhibition are Jess and Tom Simm, who moved to Middleport ten years ago. When they first arrived, the only house they could afford was in poor condition, with no running water, heating, or even floors. Despite the challenges, they have grown to love the area and now feel proud to be part of the Middleport community. Tom mentioned that Stoke has a unique culture, and while it was a shock at first, living there for ten years has made them appreciate the place and its people.
The heartbeat exhibition, called The Matter of The Heart, was created by the arts group idontloveyouanymore. Anna West, the creative director, said that the piece is meant to celebrate the fact that Middleport is a living, thriving community. The event will take place on January 21 and 22, from 4 pm to 8 pm. Everyone is invited to come and experience the light displays, which are designed to bring people together and highlight the positive spirit of the local area.
