Nick Park's painting is called Red-Legged Partridge Dancing, and it shows a cheerful bird giving a thumbs up. The theme of the exhibition is birds, and it brings together art made by students, local artists, and public figures. Headteacher Beccy Harris explained that the bird theme was chosen because it matches the school's vision to help children 'soar on wings like eagles. '
The exhibition is not just about displaying art; it is also a fundraiser for the school and community projects. People can buy the artworks either in person at the school or online. The school's chair of governors, Charlie Arbuthnott, sent out painting kits and small canvases to several celebrities, inviting them to create bird-inspired art. At first, there was no response, but soon the first canvas arrived from Dame Prue Leith, a well-known chef and TV personality. The celebrities agreed to let the school sell their paintings in an online auction, so anyone can own one of these special pieces. Joanna Lumley painted a dove, and Bill Bailey created a picture of swallows. The students were thrilled to see the contributions from these famous people.
The exhibition is part of Oxford Art Weeks and will be open on 16-17 and 23-25 May. The money raised will go towards improving the school's adventure playground, which needs repairs, and restoring a community green space that is used a lot. Arbuthnott said they want to show everyone what a wonderful school they have in Jericho and hope to get lots of support for their fundraising. Headteacher Harris added that the exhibition is about more than just art; it is about inspiring children and visitors. Historian Mark Davies will also give talks about how Oxford and Jericho inspired famous artists like Lewis Carroll and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The school has a colorful mural with an eagle and a rainbow, reminding everyone of their message to 'soar on wings. '
