Brazilian Cops Snag Stolen Matisse Masterpieces in Daring Art Heist
Eight valuable illustrations by the famous French artist Henri Matisse have been recovered by police in Brazil after being stolen from a library in São Paulo. These illustrations, which are colorful cut-out collages, were estimated to be worth about two hundred thousand dollars. The police found the artworks in a house in São Bernardo do Campo, a town near São Paulo, and arrested a forty-four-year-old man who was at the scene. The authorities believe he was keeping the stolen art for the people who actually took it from the library. They also found a handgun in the house, which led to more charges against the man.
The theft happened on December 7th of last year at the Mario de Andrade Library. Two thieves entered the library, overpowered a security guard and an elderly couple who were visiting, and then walked out with the Matisse illustrations. The thieves put the artworks in a canvas bag and left through the main entrance, heading toward the nearest metro station. The police have already arrested three other people in connection with the case. However, five engravings by the Brazilian artist Candido Portinari, which were also stolen during the robbery, have not been found yet. The police suspect that these missing works may have already been sold.
The Matisse illustrations and the Portinari engravings were part of a special exhibition called 'From Book to Museum,' which was a joint project between the library and the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition was about how art can move from books to museums, and the thieves targeted it on its final day. After the robbery, the local department of culture said that the Matisse illustrations had been returned to the library and that security had been improved. Matisse is considered one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, and experts say the true value of his work is impossible to measure. Portinari is also a significant figure in Brazilian art, known for his paintings of rural workers. The police are still searching for the missing Portinari engravings and are working to make sure the library is safe for future visitors.
