Prada Steps Up: Indian-Made Kolhapuri Sandals Turn Luxury Trend

Prada, the well-known Italian luxury brand, has recently launched a new collection of sandals inspired by the traditional Indian Kolhapuri sandals. These sandals have a long history in India, dating back to the 12th century, and are mainly made in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Kolhapuri sandals are famous for being handmade from leather and colored with natural dyes, making them perfect for hot weather. They are a symbol of Indian craftsmanship and are still very popular in India today.

Last year, Prada introduced a sandal design at a Milan fashion show that looked very similar to the Kolhapuri sandals. However, the company did not mention that the design was inspired by Indian tradition. This caused a lot of criticism, as many people felt that Prada was using Indian culture without giving proper credit or recognition. This kind of situation is often called cultural appropriation, where a company or person uses elements from another culture without respecting its origins. After facing backlash, Prada decided to change its approach.

Now, Prada's new sandals are actually made in India by skilled artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka. The sandals are being sold in 40 Prada stores around the world and online, with each pair handmade and priced at around 750 euros, which is about 881 dollars. Prada says that the new collection combines traditional Indian techniques with modern design and high-quality materials. The company also announced a three-year training program for Indian artisans, in partnership with two Indian design institutes. This program will train 180 artisans in six-month courses, and some may even get the chance to continue their training at Prada's academy in Italy. The goal is to help artisans improve their skills, preserve traditional knowledge, and support local communities. In India, Kolhapuri sandals usually cost between 500 and 1,000 rupees, which is much less than Prada's luxury version. Many people hope that this new project will help Indian artisans gain more recognition and better rewards for their work.
