BTS Ticket Scams: Fans Battle Bots and Crooks for Comeback Concerts

BTS, the world-famous K-pop group, is back on tour after more than three years away from the stage. Their return has sparked huge excitement among their fans, known as Army, especially in Southeast Asia where the band is performing 15 out of 88 shows. For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see their idols live. Vevee, a 26-year-old fan from Jakarta, Indonesia, was one of those who tried hard to get tickets. She spent hours waiting online, hoping to buy tickets through Ticketmaster, but they sold out quickly. After several failed attempts, she turned to social media and found someone selling tickets. She paid $1,200 for four VIP seats, which was almost two months of her salary. Sadly, after she sent the money, the seller disappeared and stopped replying to her messages. Vevee was left feeling heartbroken and cheated.

This is not an isolated case. Across Southeast Asia, fans have lost more than $100,000 to scammers who are taking advantage of the high demand for BTS tickets. In Thailand, 126 fans complained to lawmakers after being tricked by someone who promised to help them buy tickets. Scammers have also joined online fan groups, offering exclusive access or cheaper tickets, but once they receive the money, they vanish. Some even use fake legal documents to make their offers seem real. Despite warnings from the police, many fans are still falling for these scams. In Singapore, there have been at least 62 reports of BTS ticket scams since June, with losses totaling over S$68,000. The e-commerce site Carousell has even banned ticket resales until after the final BTS show in Singapore to help prevent more scams.

BTS's tour is massive, covering 34 cities and running until 2027. Tickets in Southeast Asia range from $100 to $300, with the most expensive packages including special perks like soundcheck access and exclusive merchandise. For fans like Vevee, who have followed BTS for years, seeing them live is a dream come true. Some fans go to great lengths, like renting computers at internet cafes for better chances at buying tickets. Others, like Juraluk Kunaruk in Thailand, have taken their complaints to parliament after losing money to scammers. Ticket companies like Ticketmaster say they are using new technology to fight scalpers and bots, and they urge fans to only buy tickets from official sources. Despite the risks, many fans are still willing to take a chance for the opportunity to see BTS. After many tries and working together with friends, Vevee finally managed to get her tickets, showing just how determined BTS fans can be.
