From Kitchen Cartoons to Cold War Thrills: The Spy Stories of Len Deighton

Len Deighton was a well-known British author who became famous for his spy novels. Born in London in 1929, Len grew up in a working-class family. His mother worked as a cook and his father was a chauffeur for a wealthy family. As a child, Len did not enjoy school and often skipped classes. Instead, he spent his time reading books at the local library, which helped him learn a lot on his own.

After finishing school, Len joined the Royal Air Force, where he learned skills like photography, flying, and scuba diving. He later worked as a railway clerk and an air steward. Len was also a talented artist and started his career as a cartoonist, drawing cooking strips for newspapers. These cartoons were later collected into cookbooks that became popular with young people living on their own for the first time.

Len’s big break as a writer came when he wrote The Ipcress File, a spy novel set during the Cold War. Unlike James Bond, Len’s main character was an ordinary working-class man who had to deal with the problems of his job, including dealing with a difficult boss and office politics. The book was a huge success and was turned into a movie starring Michael Caine. This made Len Deighton a household name.

He continued to write more spy novels, as well as books about World War Two. One of his most famous books, Bomber, told the story of an RAF raid over Germany and showed the war from both sides. Len also wrote about what might have happened if Germany had won the war, in a book called SS-GB. His stories were known for being realistic and for showing that heroes could be regular people, not just glamorous spies.

Len was involved in making movies and wrote for magazines like Playboy. He enjoyed cooking and often hosted dinner parties for his friends. In the 1990s, Len decided to stop writing and moved to Ireland with his wife and children. He lived quietly and rarely gave interviews. Even though his books were not as famous as James Bond stories, Len Deighton is remembered as a master of the spy novel and for creating characters that readers could relate to.
