Magical Elfin Oak's Enchanted Creatures Get a Sparkling Makeover!

In the heart of Kensington Gardens in London, there is a very unique and magical tree called the Elfin Oak. This old oak tree is famous because it is covered with tiny carvings of elves, fairies, goblins, witches, and woodland animals. These carvings were first created in July 1930 by Ivor Innes, who was a children's book illustrator. He used the natural bumps and shapes of the oak tree to make the little figures look like they were part of the tree itself. The oak tree was actually moved from Richmond Park before it became the home for these magical creatures.

Recently, the Elfin Oak and its carvings have been carefully restored so that people can continue to enjoy them for many years. The restoration was made possible by the Royal Parks charity and the Friends of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, who both helped pay for the work. The goal was to make sure the 97 figurines, which include characters like Wookey the witch, Huckleberry the gnome, and Harebell the fairy, would stay safe and colorful. Wookey is a little old witch who wears a black cloak with stars, purple shoes, and an orange scarf, and she holds a broomstick. Each character has its own personality and story, making the tree even more interesting for visitors.

Andy Williams, the park manager, said that Kensington Gardens is one of the most magical parks for children, and the Elfin Oak is a big part of that magic. He is very pleased that the tree has been restored to its former glory. The Elfin Oak is located near the entrance to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground, so many children and families see it when they come to play. The tree is also a Grade II-listed structure, which means it is considered very important and must be protected. Thanks to the restoration, the Elfin Oak and its magical creatures will continue to delight visitors and inspire their imaginations for many years to come.
