Northumberland's AI Boom: New £3.8bn Data Hub Nears Approval
A proposal has been submitted to build a second artificial intelligence data centre in Northumberland, just a short distance from an existing facility in Blyth. The company behind the plan, Wansbeck Regeneration Ltd, wants to construct the new centre on farmland at West Sleekburn. The project is expected to cost around three point eight billion pounds. The site is currently used for agriculture, but if the plan is approved, it will be transformed into a high-tech data centre. The new centre would be located less than two miles from another data centre at Cambois, making the area a growing hub for technology and data storage.
The North East region is quickly becoming a key location for data centres, with support from the government and local leaders. They hope to make the region one of the largest data centre hubs in Europe. Data centres are important because they store and process huge amounts of information for businesses, governments, and people. The company says the new centre will have its own private water supply from a borehole, so it will not affect the water used by local residents or other businesses.
According to the planning documents, the new data centre could create a significant number of jobs. It is estimated that up to seven hundred eighty-five full-time jobs could be created, along with one thousand ninety-five indirect jobs that support the centre. The planning statement also says that data centres benefit from being close to each other, so having two centres nearby could be helpful. Before any building can start, the plan needs to be approved. If it is, a more detailed plan will be submitted for final approval. The first data centre in the area, run by a US company, received outline permission in March. Local residents have already received information about the new plan, and meetings have been held to discuss it. If the project goes ahead, it could bring new opportunities and growth to the area.
