'Prison turned me into an award-winning artist'

Kevin Devonport's life is a remarkable story of transformation and redemption. Once a soldier who fell into a life of crime, he found his true passion for art while serving a prison sentence. At 52 years old, Kevin has become a successful artist, winning multiple awards and showcasing his work in London. His journey began after he left the Army at the age of 21, where he struggled with drug addiction and criminal activities. In 2007, he was caught selling heroin, marking the beginning of a turning point in his life. Facing another long prison sentence, Kevin decided to take the advice of a fellow inmate who told him, 'Don't serve time, let time serve you. ' This advice motivated him to use his time in prison constructively. He enrolled in the Open University and earned a first-class honours degree in sociology. However, it was a painting class organized by the charity Care After Combat that truly changed his life. Kevin had never considered himself an artist before, but he quickly discovered a talent for painting. His first piece, a simple landscape, may not have been perfect, but it ignited a passion within him. While still incarcerated, he won his first national award for his artwork, which was a significant achievement for someone who had once been a self-proclaimed 'career criminal. ' Kevin's art often reflects his experiences, including his time in the Army and the challenges he faced in the justice system. He believes that each piece tells a story, and he wants viewers to understand the meanings behind his work. After his release in 2014, Kevin faced the difficult task of reintegrating into society. The stigma of being an ex-convict was a challenge, but he found solace in his art. His daughter, Sinead, who is now eight years old, has also been a source of inspiration for him. Kevin's first exhibition, titled 'Unlabelled,' allowed him to express his identity and share his journey with the world. He describes being an artist as a way to anchor himself and find a sense of belonging. His artwork is currently displayed in various locations, including Leadenhall Market in London, and he continues to work in his studio in Leeds.
