Ally Pally Turns 90: Celebrating BBC TV's Historic First Broadcast!

Alexandra Palace, often called Ally Pally, is a well-known landmark in north London. This year, it is celebrating a major milestone: the 90th anniversary of the BBC's first television service, which began broadcasting from the palace in November 1936. To honor this historic event, Alexandra Palace will host a series of activities and events that highlight its important role in the history of British television. Visitors will have the opportunity to take guided tours of the original BBC studios, where some of the earliest TV programs were made. David Hendy, a professor of media and cultural history, explains that the world's first regular 'high-definition' television service was launched from Ally Pally on November 2, 1936. At that time, 'high-definition' meant the pictures were much clearer than before, using more lines to create a sharper image. The BBC wanted to stand out from a German TV service that had started the year before but used fewer lines, making its pictures less clear. The first BBC viewers saw a variety of entertainment, including a one-man band with a monkey, dancers, contortionists, and even cooking demonstrations. These early programs showed how creative and innovative television could be, even in its earliest days.

From September to November, Alexandra Palace will run a 'television heritage season' designed to engage the public and bring together people who are interested in TV history. The program will include talks, film screenings, and live performances aimed at families and people of all ages. To mark the anniversary, a special World Origin Site plaque will be installed at the palace. These plaques are used to recognize places where something truly groundbreaking was invented or first used. Kirsten Forrest, who manages the palace's collections, says this is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness about Ally Pally's place in TV history. She notes that tours of the old studios are already very popular, but the team wants to learn more about what kinds of heritage experiences visitors would enjoy in the future. By celebrating this anniversary, Alexandra Palace hopes to remind everyone of its unique role in the story of television and inspire new generations to explore its rich history.
