Epic Moon Flash Caught Live: Rare Lunar Impact Lights Up Armagh Sky!

A rare and exciting astronomical event was recently captured in Armagh, Ireland, when Andrew Marshall-Lee, a final-year PhD student, recorded a lunar impact flash on video. According to the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, this is believed to be the first time such an event has been filmed on the island of Ireland and only the second time in the UK. A lunar impact flash is a brief explosion of light that occurs when a small object, such as a rock or piece of metal, crashes into the Moon's surface at a very high speed. These flashes are extremely rare and difficult to detect because they only last for a fraction of a second.

Andrew used the Armagh Robotic Telescope to capture the footage. He explained that astronomers usually have to record hours of video and use special software to search for these flashes, but he was fortunate enough to be watching the screen at the exact moment the flash occurred. He described the experience as incredibly special and said it would stay with him for the rest of his life. The observatory noted that lunar impact flashes are more likely to be seen during major meteor showers, when the Moon passes through streams of debris left behind by comets and asteroids.

The objects that cause these flashes are usually very small, often tinier than a golf ball, and are too faint to be seen with a telescope while they are still in space. When they hit the Moon at speeds of around 35 kilometers per second, their kinetic energy is instantly converted into heat and light, vaporizing material at the impact site and creating the flash visible from Earth. Andrew observed the impact during the peak of a meteor shower, which is likely the source of the object that struck the Moon. The observatory is continuing to investigate the origin of the object and has released a video of the flash. This discovery is important for scientists because it provides valuable information about how often the Moon is hit by space debris and what happens during these impacts. Andrew's recording is a significant achievement for astronomy in Ireland and the UK.
