Lower back pain is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It can happen to anyone, but is more likely in people who sit for long periods, are overweight, or have had back pain before. The pain is usually felt between the lower ribs and the buttocks, and it can make simple tasks like bending down or standing up difficult. Fortunately, there is a simple exercise called seated salsa that can help ease this pain, and you do not even need to leave your chair to do it.

The backbone is made up of bones called vertebrae, separated by soft discs that cushion the bones and act as shock absorbers. Most lower back pain occurs in the bottom two vertebrae, which are attached to the pelvis with thick ligaments. These ligaments keep the bones in place and help support the weight of your upper body. However, this part of the back is very stiff and hard to move, especially when the muscles are tight or in spasm because of pain or lack of use. When the muscles freeze up, it can make the pain worse and create a cycle where the back gets stiffer and more painful.

Experts say that moving your back is important for recovery. While many stretches and exercises are recommended for back pain, most do not target the lower part of the back. Seated salsa is different. To do this exercise, sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and your legs together. Keep your shoulders still. Push your right knee forward while pulling your left knee back, then switch so your left knee goes forward and your right knee goes back. Your pelvis will roll forward on one side and back on the other, similar to a salsa dance. Repeat this movement for one minute.

Research shows that doing seated salsa for just one minute every thirty minutes can help relax the muscles in your lower back and reduce pain. This exercise is easy to do at work, especially for people who spend a lot of time sitting at a desk. Getting up and walking around is also helpful, but if you cannot leave your desk, seated salsa is a good alternative. The exercise is also useful for older people or those with limited mobility, as it can be done while sitting. Experts recommend making small exercises a regular habit, such as standing on one leg while brushing your teeth or doing squats while waiting for the kettle to boil. These small changes can help you stay active and improve your overall health.
