Discover the Epic 20ft 'Bailgate Papestry' Showcasing Lincoln's Historic Streets!

A unique and impressive artwork called the 'Bailgate Papestry' is set to be displayed at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln. The artist, Matthew Wright, who is from Lincoln, spent over a year creating this detailed drawing. The artwork is drawn on a huge roll of paper that is about 20 feet long. It features an architectural sketch of Bailgate, one of Lincoln's oldest and most historic streets. The drawing starts at the assembly rooms and stretches all the way to the Newport Arch, a Roman gate that has stood since the 3rd Century. Matthew wanted his exhibition to be free so that everyone in the community could enjoy it, which was very important to him when choosing where to show his work.

Bailgate is a street full of history, with more than 20 buildings that have listed status, meaning they are protected because of their special history and architecture. Some of the shops on Bailgate are as old as the 13th Century. Matthew said he still has 14 more buildings to add to his drawing before it is completely finished and ready for the exhibition. He feels honored and grateful to have his work shown in such a respected gallery. He explained that the drawing is as close to real size as possible and that he tried to include every detail he could.

The 'Bailgate Papestry' was inspired by the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which is known for its length and the way it tells a story through pictures. Matthew's drawing is also very long and full of life-like details. He used ink to make the buildings look realistic, and he even included a pub called the 'Prince of Wales Inn' in his artwork. At the exhibition, there will also be a video showing how Matthew created the drawing, so visitors can see his creative process. Matthew said he loves drawing, especially when it comes to celebrating architecture and history. He hopes his project will bring the community together and help people appreciate the rich history of Lincoln. The museum said the drawing carefully shows the buildings along Bailgate and Steep Hill, two of Lincoln's most famous landmarks. The exhibition will be open from June 19 to July 12, and everyone is welcome to come and see this amazing piece of art.
