Charity finds more than 500,000 child abuse victims

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a charity located in Histon, Cambridgeshire, has made a significant discovery this year, identifying over 500,000 children who have been victims of online abuse. This organization is dedicated to removing child sexual abuse imagery from the internet, and they have a dedicated team of analysts who work tirelessly to achieve this goal. One of these analysts, who goes by the name Mabel to protect her identity, has been with the IWF for four years. Mabel explains that her job involves staying 'one step ahead' of those who create and share harmful content. She states, 'You're always trying to uncover what they're doing next to get ahead of them. ' Mabel feels a strong sense of purpose in her work, especially as a grandmother, knowing that she is helping to protect children, including her own grandchildren, from exposure to such disturbing material. The IWF has a team of frontline staff who are responsible for identifying and removing online child sexual abuse imagery from around the world. This year, they have recorded a staggering 563,590 child victims in images alone, with the majority being girls aged between seven and ten. Mabel emphasizes that the methods used by criminals to hide their content are constantly changing, making it increasingly difficult for her and her colleagues to do their jobs effectively. She mentions that sometimes, she has to watch a video to find a password that leads to another video containing harmful content. The IWF also has a technology team that is always on the lookout for new software to help them crack codes and find hidden material. Dan Sexton, the chief technology officer at the IWF, shares that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are making their work even more challenging. He explains that with the rise of generative AI, criminals now have the ability to create an almost infinite amount of new child sexual abuse content. This year alone, the IWF has encountered over 2. 7 million unique images of child sexual abuse, and this number continues to grow. Dan acknowledges that while these figures may be shocking to some, they do not come as a surprise to him. He attributes the successful removal of these images to the hard work and dedication of staff members like Mabel and the other frontline workers. The IWF takes the mental health of its employees seriously, providing mandatory counseling sessions and regular breaks to help them cope with the emotional toll of their work. Mabel, who previously worked as a police officer, finds her role at the IWF to be both challenging and rewarding.
