Dr Laura Sillars, director of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, believes this is a 'once in a lifetime chance' for the area. The town has already been chosen to host the Turner Prize, which is the biggest contemporary art prize in the world, later this year. Dr Sillars says the culture bid has support from partners across the region, and winning could be a 'game-changing moment' for Middlesbrough.

At Happy Rooms, a family attraction designed by artists, there is a sense that this is Middlesbrough's time to shine. The town's digital sector is growing quickly, and those behind the bid believe that winning would help drive growth, create new jobs, and encourage talented people to stay in the region. Bini Araia, from the International Centre, says there is much good in Middlesbrough that people rarely see. He points out that on one road, there are 20 different nationalities living together peacefully. The town's Mela festival has become one of the most spectacular multicultural events in the North East.

Middlesbrough is competing with Blackpool, Inverness-Highland, Ipswich, Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon, and Wrexham for the title. For the first time, the winner will receive a cash prize of £10 million to deliver a year of cultural activities. The winner is expected to be announced at the end of the year. Mayor Chris Cooke says the bid is about celebrating the creativity of residents, artists, and businesses, and changing how people view the town. Middlesbrough has many cultural highlights, such as the Diwali concert in Centre Square, where singers perform for large crowds.
