The Rio Ferdinand Foundation has created an exciting opportunity for young people in the north west who are interested in rap music. As part of their outreach program, the foundation invited Dublin rapper Sello to spend several days coaching teenagers. Sello, who began rapping for his friends in secondary school, has become a rising star in the music scene. He has released a debut album, appeared on popular TV shows like RTÉ's Late Late Show, and performed at major music festivals. Sello's journey to success was not easy. His family had to leave Nigeria because of persecution and moved to Ireland, where they were among the first black families. Sello remembers that it was difficult at first because some people did not understand ethnic minorities, but he feels that things have improved over time. He says he is proud to be both a refugee and an Irishman, and his music reflects his experiences and his love for Irish culture.

During the project, the teenagers worked with Sello to create an original song and then went to a recording studio in Londonderry for a freestyle session. Sello enjoyed sharing his musical journey and helping the young people develop their skills. Sean Thornton from the Rio Ferdinand Foundation said it was a big achievement to have Sello work with the group. He believes that meeting someone like Sello shows young people that they can also succeed in the music industry if they are determined. One participant, Ciaran, was thrilled to be part of the project because music is a big part of his family. He said he learned a lot about how music is made and how to promote yourself as an artist. Ciaran described the experience as an important opportunity that he would not have had otherwise.

Another participant, Jo, is a gospel artist who started playing music in his church. He wanted to learn more about the music industry and said working with Sello was a great chance to do so. Jo discovered that success in music is not just about talent; it also involves personality, uniqueness, and branding. He realized that there are many factors that contribute to becoming a successful artist. The project also gave the young people the chance to watch Sello perform live at a sold-out concert at The Nerve Centre in Derry. This experience brought together young rappers from Northern Ireland and helped them learn more about the world of music and how to pursue their dreams.
