Volunteers Steam Ahead with Heritage Railway's Exciting New Line Extension

In North Dorset, a group of dedicated railway enthusiasts is working to restore a historic railway line that was closed and dismantled in the 1960s. The North Dorset Railway, located in Shillingstone, has already seen significant progress thanks to the efforts of volunteers. They have successfully rebuilt half a mile of track, including a new section that crosses Lamb House Bridge. This extension, completed in 2025, doubled the length of the line and now allows for the possibility of offering brake van rides to visitors. The railway is not just about trains; it also features a museum and a cafe, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

The chairman of the North Dorset Railway, Gavin Collins, recently shared that the group is in talks with Dorset Council about extending the railway even further. The plan is to build more track south of the station, which would increase the total length to nearly 2 kilometers. This would make the railway even more attractive to visitors and help preserve an important part of local history. Volunteers have already spent four years rebuilding a quarter-mile section of embankment and track, a project made possible by supporters who donated land, materials, and machinery. More than 100 volunteers are involved in various roles, from running the cafe and maintaining the gardens to restoring old train cars and buildings.

The railway is also planning to build a new restoration shed, which would replace the temporary shelter currently used for repairing and storing trains. This project is expected to cost around £200,000, and fundraising efforts are underway. The volunteers are committed to making the railway a safe and enjoyable place for everyone. Before they can start offering brake van rides, they need approval from the Office of Rail and Road, which ensures that all safety standards are met.
