Rock 'n' Roll Legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe Honored in Manchester

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, often called the Godmother of rock and roll, made history in Manchester in 1964 when she performed live at the old Wilbraham Road railway station. This event was part of a television show called Blues and Gospel Train, which was recorded for Granada TV. Tharpe was joined by other famous musicians, including blues legend Muddy Waters. Her performance was unique because it took place on a train platform, and she played her electric guitar with a style and energy that amazed everyone who watched. Tharpe was known for her bold presence, wearing a large coat and playing her guitar in a way that inspired many musicians who came after her, such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Little Richard.

To honor this important moment in Manchester's musical history, a blue plaque was unveiled at the site of the old station. The plaque is part of a project led by social historian and broadcaster Karen Gabay, who wants to recognize Black musicians who have made a significant impact on the city. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, which used to be the station where Tharpe and her fellow musicians boarded the train to Whalley Range. Karen Gabay spoke about how Sister Rosetta Tharpe's confidence and talent left a lasting impression on everyone who saw her perform.

The event was attended by well-known singers Pauline Black, the lead singer of the ska band The Selecter, and soul singer Ruby Turner. Both artists said that Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a major influence on their own music careers. Pauline Black pointed out that it was unusual to see women, especially Black women, playing the electric guitar with such power and being respected by famous musicians like Chuck Berry and Keith Richards. Ruby Turner shared that she sang Tharpe's songs when she was a teenager, and it was important for her to be at the ceremony. Also present was Dave Lunt, a fan who attended the original 1964 recording. He remembered that the weather was cold and unpleasant, but the music made the experience unforgettable. The blue plaque now serves as a reminder of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's groundbreaking performance and her lasting influence on music in Manchester and beyond.
