UK Embraces AI Counselors: 4 in 10 Ready for Digital Mental Health Help!
A recent study led by Bournemouth University in the UK has revealed that more than four in ten adults in the UK would be comfortable using artificial intelligence, or AI, for mental health support. The research surveyed around 31,000 adults from 35 countries, asking them about their willingness to use AI for important roles such as counselling, teaching, medical care, and even friendship. In the UK, 41 percent of participants said they would be happy to use AI for counselling services, while globally, this number was even higher at 61 percent. This shows that many people are open to the idea of using technology to help with their mental health, especially if it means getting support faster.
The study also found that 25 percent of UK adults would trust AI to help teach their children, and 26 percent would be willing to let AI act as their doctor. The highest level of trust was seen in the role of AI as a friend, with 53 percent of UK participants saying they would talk to AI like ChatGPT as a companion. Globally, 45 percent of people said they would trust AI to be their doctor, and even more would use it as a friend. Dr Ala Yankouskaya, the lead researcher, explained that people might turn to AI for counselling if they are experiencing depression and do not want to wait months for an appointment with a real counsellor.
However, Dr Yankouskaya also pointed out some concerns. She tested some AI tools herself and found that the language used was often vague and confusing, as developers are careful not to give direct medical advice. This means that AI is not a replacement for speaking to a real health professional. There are also risks, such as AI chatbots giving out wrong health information. The study also raised questions about the long-term effects of using AI for teaching children, as it is not clear how it might affect their memory and thinking skills. The mental health charity Mind has started a commission to look at the benefits and risks of using AI in mental health. They believe AI has great potential, but it must be developed responsibly and with proper safeguards to protect people's wellbeing.
