Proposed solar farm could power 140,000 homes

A significant new solar farm is being proposed that has the potential to supply electricity to 140,000 homes in Kent. This figure represents about 20% of all homes in the county, which is quite impressive. The energy company Low Carbon has unveiled plans for a solar farm that would generate 500 megawatts of power, and it is set to be located on Romney Marsh, specifically around the village of Old Romney. The solar farm would be situated on both sides of the A259 road, which is a busy route in the area. The landscape where the solar farm is proposed is picturesque, featuring lush green fields, a bright blue sky, and some bare trees in the distance. Paul Thomas, a representative from the Folkestone and Hythe District Council, has expressed his desire to see more detailed information regarding the project. He plans to attend a public event to inquire whether the land will still be suitable for sheep grazing after the solar farm is built. Additionally, he is concerned about the potential impact on agriculture and farming jobs in the Romney Marsh area. For solar farms that are larger than 50 megawatts, they do not require permission from the local council. Instead, they must obtain a development consent order from the government, which involves a lengthy approval process. Although the plans have not yet been submitted, Low Carbon has stated that if the solar farm is constructed, it will become one of the largest solar farms in the United Kingdom. The proposed facility would cover an area equivalent to 840 football pitches, which is quite substantial. The solar farm would connect to the National Grid, either through an existing substation located in Dungeness or through a new substation that may be built nearby. David Browne, who works for Convert Energy, a solar company based in Canterbury, mentioned that the approval process for the new solar farm could take some time. He noted that Kent has had a complicated history with large solar developments, citing the Cleve Hill solar park in Graveney as an example. However, he believes that the location of the proposed solar park is logical, as the existing infrastructure should be capable of managing the energy output from the solar farm. The company is currently gathering feedback on its proposal online until December 20, and they are also hosting in-person events for the community to learn more about the project. One of these events will take place at Ivychurch Village Hall on November 26, while another will be held at New Romney Scout Hall on November 27. An online event is also scheduled for December 12, allowing more people to participate and ask questions.
