YouTube urged to promote 'high-quality' children's TV

Nandy praised the quality of UK-produced children's television, noting that it plays a vital role in helping children understand the world around them. However, she pointed out that many children do not encounter these programs because they are not adequately promoted on popular websites. The government is eager to support the UK's children's television industry, but a previous funding initiative revealed that while more quality content was produced, children were not necessarily watching it. Nandy believes this is due to the difficulty children face in finding these shows. The government is seeking a voluntary agreement with online platforms to improve the situation, but Nandy indicated that they are prepared to take further action if necessary. She stated, 'We would much prefer for them to work with us to make sure children are able to see and find high-quality content much more easily. ' Nandy acknowledged the positive aspects of YouTube, noting that it allows individuals to launch their careers from their own homes, but emphasized the need for a balance in content promotion. She also called on Ofcom to prioritize children's television in their upcoming public service broadcasting review, which is expected to be released in the summer. Baroness Benjamin highlighted the significant influence of television on children's thoughts and behaviors, but expressed concern over the declining quality and quantity of children's programming. During her guest editorship of Today, she advocated for greater emphasis on ensuring that children have access to suitable entertainment, warning of a 'crisis' and 'turmoil' in the industry as children increasingly shift to online platforms.
