Suffolk Kids Craft Book Characters on Spoons for World Book Day Fun

Bardwell Church of England Primary School in Suffolk decided to celebrate World Book Day in a new way this year. Instead of asking students to dress up as their favorite book characters, the school gave each child a wooden spoon to decorate. The children used paint, markers, and other craft materials to turn their spoons into characters from their favorite stories. In a photo, a group of students wearing colorful school jumpers smiled proudly, each holding up their unique spoon creation.

Headteacher Kelly Frost explained why the school chose this activity. She said that in the past, dressing up for World Book Day could be difficult for some families. Costumes can take a lot of time and money to make or buy, and not every child enjoys wearing them. Sometimes, students would come dressed as princesses or superheroes, not always as characters from books they had actually read. Kelly Frost wanted to make sure that every child could take part in the celebration, no matter their situation at home. She said, 'We wanted it to be about a book, and we wanted it to be something everyone could do. '

The spoon decorating idea turned out to be a big success. Almost every student brought in a decorated spoon, and the variety was impressive. Some spoons looked like Harry Potter, the BFG, or even robots. The activity was popular with both students and parents, and it helped everyone feel included. Kelly Frost said it was wonderful to see the children excited about reading and sharing their favorite characters. She added, 'It's really exciting to see the children having a day that's all about reading. ' The school hopes to continue this new tradition in the future.
