Get Up Close and Personal with Monet’s Winter Seine Masterpiece in Hull!

Hull is hosting a rare and exciting art event as a famous painting by Claude Monet, The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil, is now on display at the Ferens Art Gallery. This masterpiece, painted in 1872, usually hangs in the National Gallery in London and has only left there once in the past twenty years. The painting shows a calm winter scene on the edge of Argenteuil, a small town near Paris, with two figures standing by the River Seine. Now, people in Hull have the unique opportunity to see this artwork up close, as it is displayed lower than usual, making it easier for visitors to appreciate Monet's brushwork and details.

The exhibition is not just about Monet's painting. The Ferens Art Gallery is also showing pieces from its own collection and new works created by Flourish, a group of young and disabled artists from Hull. These artists have been inspired by Monet's masterpiece and have created their own responses to it. They worked with sound artist Donna Smith to make a soundscape that takes visitors on an imaginary journey down the Seine River. There is also a special touchable version of Monet's painting, allowing people to experience the art through touch, which is not possible with the original painting. This makes the exhibition more accessible and interactive for everyone.

Kerri Offord, the curator of art at the gallery, says that having the Monet painting in Hull is a fantastic opportunity for the city and its people. She is proud that the gallery can work with the local community each year when they borrow art from the National Gallery. Jackie Dad, the deputy leader of the council responsible for culture, called this event a historic moment for Hull's cultural scene. The exhibition, called Monet: Inspiring the Senses, will be open until Sunday, 13 September, and entry is free. This is a special chance for people in Hull to see a world-famous painting and enjoy art in new and creative ways.
