Victor Hugo Centre Gets Green Light for a Literary Adventure in Guernsey!

The plans for a new Victor Hugo Centre in Guernsey have been approved, bringing the project closer to reality. Victor Hugo, the famous French author, spent 15 years living in Guernsey after he was exiled from France. During his time on the island, he wrote some of his most well-known books, including Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The new centre will be located in St Peter Port, using the old States Office building and information centre.

The Victor Hugo Centre will be more than just a museum. It will be an interactive and immersive place where people can learn about Hugo's life and work. There will be a museum and interpretation centre, a space for performances and events, and a learning hub for students and visitors. The centre will celebrate Hugo as a global icon and show how his time in Guernsey influenced his writing. The project is being designed by local architects and exhibition designers, and construction is expected to start in the spring of 2027.

Larry Malcic, the chair of the Victor Hugo Centre Guernsey LBG, said that getting planning permission is a major milestone. He thanked the people of Guernsey for their support, as they have already raised more than £7. 5 million for the project. Malcic said there is still more work to do and more money to raise, but the approval means they can move forward with confidence. The centre will be a lasting tribute to Victor Hugo's extraordinary legacy and a new cultural landmark for Guernsey.
