Pirates of the Caribbean star killed in shark attack
Tamayo Perry, an actor known for his role in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, has tragically died following a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii. The 49-year-old was attacked on Sunday afternoon at Malaekahana Beach. Emergency services were alerted around 1 PM local time, but despite being brought to shore by jet ski, Perry was pronounced dead by paramedics. Perry portrayed one of the buccaneers in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a 2011 film featuring Johnny Depp as the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow, alongside Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush. In addition to his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, Perry had appeared in TV shows such as Lost, Hawaii Five-0, and Blue Crush, as well as in a Coca-Cola commercial. Born on the east side of Oahu, Perry had been a professional surfer for over a decade and also worked as a surfing instructor. He often spoke about his experiences surfing 'the world's deadliest wave' and once wrote that he could compete with the world's best surfers. Perry also mentioned a near-fatal accident that occurred several years ago due to someone else's lack of awareness, though he did not elaborate on the details. Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as a beloved lifeguard known on Oahu's north shore and internationally. 'Tamayo's personality was infectious, and he loved everyone,' Lager said. Mayor Rick Blangiardi echoed these sentiments, calling Perry's death a tragic loss. 'Tamayo was a legendary waterman and a highly respected member of our ocean safety team,' Blangiardi said. He also requested privacy for Perry's family during this difficult time.
